M-Sport shows its Ford Fiesta Rally2 with the 2027 WRC evolution kit: a €7,500 kit, 10 kg lighter, 33 mm restrictor, tested on tarmac in Spain.

Key point

M-Sport has unveiled its Ford Fiesta Rally2 with the evolution kit that lets it run in the top WRC class in 2027, 10 kg lighter and with a 33 mm restrictor.

M-Sport has unveiled the Ford Fiesta Rally2 fitted with the evolution kit that will let it compete in the top WRC class in 2027. Photos and video from a week-long tarmac test in Spain show an all-white Fiesta with a modified front bumper and rear spoiler. Former WRC driver Matthew Wilson drove the car in Tuesday's session.

A kit to bring Rally2 closer to the WRC27 cars

The FIA plans to let Rally2 manufacturers homologate an evolution kit costing no more than €7,500. The stated aim is greater aerodynamic parity between Rally2 cars and the new WRC27 cars. The two types of car will follow two separate technical regulations, but should deliver similar performance.

The kit includes:

  • new homologated front wings, a front bumper and a rear aerodynamic device;
  • a car 10 kg lighter than its current minimum weight;
  • a larger 33 mm turbo restrictor, meant to add engine power (no power figure is given).

M-Sport is the first team to develop a kit for its Fiesta Rally2. According to DirtFish, which reported the plan in June, the kit applies to Rally2 cars homologated before 31 December 2026 and can be used in 2027 and 2028. A manufacturer that homologates a kit must enter at least two cars in every round of the world championship.

M-Sport's plans for 2027

The team intends to enter three kit-equipped Rally2 cars next year, on a 2027 WRC calendar recently extended to 15 rounds. Ford will increase its support for M-Sport from 2027, and a new factory partnership with the manufacturer officially starts in 2028.

The 2027 drivers are not confirmed. Team director Richard Millener said at the season finale in Sardinia that no decision had been made. He is aiming for a win in 2029 with the future car, which leaves two years of preparation, and wants drivers who fit the team's structure and meet Ford's expectations.

Key takeaways

Toyota is currently the only manufacturer presenting an all-new car for 2027 and has no plan for a kit for its GR Yaris Rally2, according to DirtFish. With this kit, M-Sport picks a stop-gap solution while waiting for its future car. How the Fiesta really compares with the WRC27 cars will only be known in competition.
