The FIA confirms the 2027 WRC rules: Rally1 split into WRC Cars and WRC Kit Cars, a 33 mm restrictor, a constructors' title and the new Rally6 class.

Key point

WRC's 2027 Rally1 class splits into WRC Cars and WRC Kit Cars, with a 33 mm restrictor and two titles: constructors' and teams'.

The FIA has confirmed the 2027 WRC regulations after the latest meeting of its World Motor Sport Council. The top class keeps the name Rally1, but will now include two types of car: WRC Cars and WRC Kit Cars.

Two kinds of Rally1 in 2027

WRC Cars are all-new machines built to the WRC27 technical regulations. Toyota, Project Rally One and RMC Motorsport will use them.

WRC Kit Cars are Rally2 cars fitted with an FIA-homologated update kit costing about €7,500. The kit includes modified front fenders, a new front bumper and a rear aerodynamic element. M-Sport is so far the only team known to have announced this development: it has already tested a modified Ford Fiesta Rally2 in Spain. Rallye-Magazin describes a transition phase in 2027 and 2028.

For both concepts the air restrictor grows from 32 mm to 33 mm, worth about 15 hp more than current Rally2 cars. The FIA reserves the right to step in to keep appropriate performance gaps.

A constructors' title and a teams' title

  • The manufacturers' championship becomes a constructors' championship, open to any Rally1 manufacturer across the 15 rounds of the season. Independent constructors and tuners, such as Project Rally One, can enter if they contest every round.
  • A new WRC teams' classification is open to all Rally1 entrants. Each team nominates seven events, including at least one overseas round and the finale.
  • Project Rally One and RMC Motorsport do not plan to contest the full season, which makes the teams' format a natural fit.
  • The WRC2, WRC3 and WRC Masters Cup titles are kept in 2027.

Rally6, a new entry point

The FIA also approved the technical rules and homologation criteria for Rally6, the base of the rally pyramid, closely based on the French federation's FR6 rules. Estimated cost is €35,000 to €47,000.

The cars are front-wheel drive, derived from four-seat production models, with a 1.6-litre turbo or a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine. They keep production brakes and tyres, an H-pattern manual gearbox and non-adjustable dampers. Their safety level is equivalent to Rally5 Kit cars.

Key takeaway

WRC 2027 will run two design philosophies with performance close on paper, and rules meant to welcome more manufacturers. How many teams opt for the kit, currently backed only by M-Sport, remains to be seen.
