Finland's Oliver Martin steps up from UIM F4 to UIM F2 in 2027 with new team Nexgen Racing, running a Moore hull and a Mercury 200 OptiMax engine.
Key point
Finland's Oliver Martin moves from UIM F4 to UIM F2 in 2027 with Nexgen Racing, a new team that will also run Rufus Eriksson in F4.
Finnish powerboat driver Oliver Martin is taking a big step in 2027: he is leaving UIM F4 for UIM F2 with the new team Nexgen Racing, according to Powerboat News.
Nexgen Racing: a new two-driver team
Nexgen Racing will field two drivers: Oliver Martin in F2 and Rufus Eriksson in F4. Martin will race a Moore F2 hull fitted with a Mercury 200 OptiMax engine. Around him are boatbuilder Roger Lönnberg, his father Olle Martin and Tim Miilakangas, with extra help on the mechanical and media side.
Until now his F4 boat was run by Motor Mix Racing Team. Martin acknowledges that the financial step from F4 to F2 is large, so the team is broadening what it offers to partners.
A career that began at the age of five
Oliver Martin started racing at five, in town races in the Sipoo archipelago, in a small rubber dinghy with a 4hp Mercury. Before he was born, his father had bought him a Speedrace, the boat now used in GT10.
He then moved up through the classes:
- GT15 at 11, then GT30;
- F4 from 2023;
- this season, third place in the Grand Prix of Lithuania 1 at Klaipėda after qualifying second for the Q3 shootout;
- the Finnish championship this year.
Goals: finish first, then aim higher
Martin has already tested an F2 boat and is targeting the full season. His biggest challenge, he says, is seat time. In his first year he wants to finish every race and, if possible, reach the podium. In the long term he dreams of a world championship in a Formula class.
One to watch: the 2027 F2 rules
The F2 rules could change too. According to Powerboat News, seven proposals affecting F2 go to a UIM Council vote on Saturday 24 October 2026, the day before the 99th UIM General Assembly in Sintra. If adopted, they take effect on 1 January 2027. One of them provides for two sprint races on the day before the main race. Nothing is decided yet: it remains a proposal.
The editorial team will follow the build-up to the 2027 UIM F2 and F4 seasons as calendars and entries are confirmed.
