NHRA Top Fuel: Langdon can clinch the title in Las Vegas
Drag racing: Shawn Langdon leads Doug Kalitta by 139 points ahead of the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals and can wrap up the Top Fuel title with a 191-point lead.
Key point
Shawn Langdon can become NHRA Top Fuel champion in Las Vegas if he leaves with a lead of at least 191 points over his teammate Doug Kalitta.
The NHRA Top Fuel title could be decided in Las Vegas. Heading into the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals, the fifth of six playoff races, Shawn Langdon leads his teammate Doug Kalitta by 139 points. If he leaves Nevada with a lead of 191 points or more, he is the 2026 champion.
Langdon, a season of eight wins
Langdon won the first three playoff races. His run ended in the semifinals of the Texas NHRA FallNationals, stopping a streak of four straight wins and 18 straight elimination-round wins. It was his first round loss since 23 August.
His 2026 record remains strong:
- 8 wins, 3 runner-up finishes and 3 semifinals;
- 8 top qualifying spots;
- a career-best 3.648 s at 340.39 mph, set in Dallas.
He still refuses to look ahead. He says he has already seen a big lead disappear this season and wants to go “one run at a time”.
Doug Kalitta and the Sonoma precedent
Doug Kalitta, the reigning two-time champion, is second with 4 wins, 4 runner-up finishes and 6 semifinals. He is 85 points clear of third-placed Antron Brown.
He has already reversed a similar situation. Before Sonoma in July, Langdon led him by 150 points with three regular-season races left. Kalitta won the next three and entered the U.S. Nationals with a 67-point lead. He knows he needs a near-identical run over the last two races, plus some help from his teammate. He also points out that the points-and-a-half format of the final event keeps the door open.
A record for Kalitta Motorsports
The team's dragsters have won 12 of the season's 18 races and competed in 68 of the 71 rounds. Add J.R. Todd's two Funny Car wins and Kalitta Motorsports has 14 victories, the most in its history.
Funny Car: the title is still wide open
In Funny Car, Todd is third, 21 points behind Jordan Vandergriff and 36 points ahead of Austin Prock. He trails leader Matt Hagan by 119 points. Only 62 points separate the drivers ranked second to fifth.
What to watch in Las Vegas
The race is run on The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, with finals on Sunday 1 November. Langdon was runner-up there last year, his only final on this track. Kalitta has three wins in nine finals there. If Langdon does not reach the 191-point lead, the title will be decided at Pomona, at the season finale.
