MotoGP Malaysia: Martin passed fit for FP1 at Sepang
Jorge Martin (Aprilia) passes the Sepang medical despite a broken wrist and will ride FP1 on Friday, ten points behind Marc Marquez in the title fight.
Key point
Jorge Martin passed Thursday's medical check at Sepang: he will ride FP1 on Friday, then be reviewed again, ten points behind Marc Marquez in the championship.
Jorge Martin will be on track at Sepang. The Aprilia rider was declared fit on Thursday by the championship's medical team to take part in first practice at the MotoGP Malaysian Grand Prix. His condition will be reviewed after the session, and the rest of his weekend depends on it.
A broken wrist, but less serious than feared
Martin broke his right wrist when he crashed in the Phillip Island Sprint while fighting Marc Marquez for the win. Follow-up scans ruled out a suspected second fracture in the forearm and confirmed a non-displaced fracture of the end of the radius. He therefore gave up on returning to Europe, stayed in the region and is trying to ride in Malaysia.
Sunday's Australian Grand Prix was then cancelled: poor visibility meant the medical helicopter could not be used. The championship gap stayed at ten points in Marquez's favour, with four rounds and 148 points still to play for.
A medical check, not yet a green light to race
Martin does not hide the difficulty: he says he will ride with a broken wrist, that it will be painful, and that he does not yet feel confident about racing. He points out that the right hand controls both brake and throttle, and that Sepang has mostly right-hand corners. He also explains that he is giving it a go because he is in the title fight.
His first step was to get permission to ride; the next is to find out on track what the wrist allows. First practice is scheduled for Friday from 3.45 to 4.30 am French time.
A track that has not been kind to him
Sepang has not been good to Martin recently: he crashed twice there in 2025 pre-season testing, the second fall causing wrist fractures. On the manufacturer side, Ducati has won the last four Malaysian Grands Prix, while the best Aprilia finished only tenth last year.
The other riders to watch
Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse, Aprilia), who missed Phillip Island because of a finger fracture suffered at Mandalika, also passed the medical and will ride FP1 before a new assessment. At Honda HRC, Joan Mir and Luca Marini return from illness this weekend. Thunderstorms are forecast throughout the event.
