Key point
Antonio Fuoco took pole for the 6 Hours of Monza in 1'33.364 in the Ferrari #50; the two Toyotas, the only drivers' title contenders, start 15th and 16th.
The WEC finale has its first word: Antonio Fuoco took pole position for the 6 Hours of Monza in the Ferrari 499P #50 (AF Corse), with a 1'33.364. At home, the Maranello marque will start from the front of the season's last race on Sunday 8 November at 11:00 (Central European Time). Fuoco said: "It's very special to take pole at Monza".
Hypercar: Ferrari ahead of Genesis and Cadillac
The top five in Hyperpole:
- 1. Antonio Fuoco, Ferrari #50: 1'33.364;
- 2. Mathieu Jaminet, Genesis #19: 1'33.460, 0.096 s behind;
- 3. Earl Bamber, Cadillac #38 (Jota): 1'33.541;
- 4. Antonio Giovinazzi, Ferrari #51: 1'33.573;
- 5. Theo Pourchaire, Peugeot #94: 1'33.617.
The second factory Ferrari is fourth, so the Italian marque holds two of the first four places on home soil.
Toyota: the drivers' title gets tougher
The biggest story is further back. The two Toyotas, the only cars still fighting for the Hypercar drivers' title, failed to get out of the first session: the #8 of Ryo Hirakawa, Brendon Hartley and Sébastien Buemi, the championship leader, starts 15th; the #7 of Kamui Kobayashi 16th. Aston Martin did not reach Hyperpole either.
Toyota already secured the manufacturers' title at Barcelona. For the #8, Motorsport Week says a finish of seventh or better is enough to be champion. Starting 15th makes the job less comfortable than expected, at a track where passing is possible but over six hours in which neutralisations can happen.
LMGT3: last pole for the Lexus
In LMGT3, Hadrien David (Lexus RC F GT3, Auto Sport Promotion) took pole with a 1'47.523. According to Motorsport.com, it is the last pole for the Lexus RC F GT3, which will be replaced next season by the Toyota GR GT3. LMGT3 championship leader Jonny Edgar (Corvette #33) will also be fighting for the title on Sunday.
Key takeaway
Ferrari starts its home finale from pole, while Toyota's #8 and #7 must climb from mid-grid to settle the Hypercar drivers' title on Sunday at 11:00.
