Qatar MotoGP: Marc Marquez leads Jorge Martin by 49 points and can be crowned champion on Sunday if he wins and Martin scores no points at all.

Key point

Marc Marquez becomes 2026 MotoGP world champion at Losail on Sunday only if he wins the race and Jorge Martin finishes outside the points, which would stretch the gap to 74 points.

The match ball is there for Marc Marquez. After winning Saturday's sprint at Losail, the Ducati rider can be crowned 2026 MotoGP world champion as early as Sunday's Qatar Grand Prix. But the scenario is narrow and also depends on his rival, Jorge Martin (Aprilia).

Where the championship stands

After the sprint, Marquez has 411 points, against 362 for Martin and 332 for Marco Bezzecchi. His lead is 49 points over Martin and 79 over Bezzecchi. Qatar is round 20 of a 22-round season: Portimão (20 to 22 November) and Valencia (27 to 29 November) follow, worth a maximum of 74 points.

The only scenario for Sunday

For the title to be settled at Losail, the gap must exceed what Martin could still claw back, which is 74 points. Only one combination gets there:

  • Marquez wins the Qatar Grand Prix, worth 25 points;
  • Martin scores no points, so he finishes 16th or lower, or retires.

Marquez would then be on 436 points against 362 for Martin, exactly 74 points clear. Even if Martin then took every remaining point and finished level with Marquez, the tie would be decided on Grand Prix wins, of which Marquez has more. Bezzecchi's result has no bearing on this scenario.

If the condition is not met

If Marquez finishes second or lower, or Martin scores even a single point (15th place or better), the title cannot be awarded in Qatar. The decision would then move to Portimão at the earliest.

An already tense weekend

The sprint was a reminder of how uncertain the track can be. Marquez won after a contact with Bezzecchi, who crashed. Martin, hampered by a fractured wrist, took third behind Fabio Di Giannantonio. Francesco Bagnaia was hit by Fermín Aldeguer and has fractures in his right foot, ruling him out of the Grand Prix.

What to watch

The Qatar Grand Prix starts at 17:00 Central European Time. If Marquez does his part and Martin stays out of the points, the title is decided at the chequered flag; otherwise, it is on to Portugal.

Frequently asked questions

What does Marc Marquez need to be world champion on Sunday in Qatar?

He must win the Grand Prix and Jorge Martin must score no points, meaning a finish of 16th or lower, or a retirement. The gap would then be 74 points.

Why are 74 points enough?

Only 74 points remain across the last two rounds, Portimão and Valencia. In a tie, Marquez would win on his greater number of Grand Prix victories.

When could the title be decided otherwise?

If Marquez finishes second or lower, or Martin scores at least one point, the decision cannot come before Portimão, on 20 to 22 November.
