Bathurst 1000: Kostecki and Hazelwood win as De Pasquale runs dry
Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood (Ford) win the Supercars Bathurst 1000 after race leader Anton De Pasquale runs out of fuel on the final lap.
Key point
Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood won the 2026 Bathurst 1000 in a Ford: Anton De Pasquale, leading on the last lap, ran out of fuel on the final climb.
Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood won the 2026 Bathurst 1000 on Sunday 11 October in the Dick Johnson Racing Ford Mustang. The finish was dramatic: the leaders Anton De Pasquale and Lee Holdsworth (Team 18, Chevrolet Camaro) ran out of fuel on the last climb of Mount Panorama while leading the final lap.
A finish decided by fuel
- Team 18 had short-fuelled De Pasquale at his last stop to gain track position. It was too tight: the car slowed on the climb up Mountain Straight, lost the lead and retired. It is classified on 160 laps, one fewer than the winner.
- Chaz Mostert hit the wall at Forrests Elbow with five laps to go. The race's first safety car came out on lap 156 of 161.
- Kostecki and Hazelwood completed the 161 laps in 5 h 54.
The Bathurst 1000 podium
- Brodie Kostecki / Todd Hazelwood, Ford, Dick Johnson Racing
- Will Brown / Scott Pye, Ford, Triple Eight, 1.1844 seconds behind
- Zach Bates / Aaron Seton, Chevrolet, Matt Stone Racing, 1.9265 seconds behind
Bates started from pole position. According to Speedcafe, it is the first Supercars podium for both him and Seton. Jack Le Brocq and Harri Jones (Matt Stone Racing) were fourth, Matt Payne and Will Davison (Grove Racing, Ford) fifth.
A win that nearly slipped away
The number 17 Ford fell out of contention at the penultimate stop, when a brake rotor would not mount on the hub, costing more than 25 seconds. Kostecki also worked with team manager Tom Moore, because his regular race engineer George Commins missed the race after a mountain bike accident.
Heat played its part: track temperatures went above 37°C, with blistered rear tyres. Some teams blamed inconsistent quality in the Ferodo brake pads.
What it means for the championship
- Matt Payne keeps the championship lead.
- Jack Le Brocq takes the tenth and final place in the Supercars Finals.
- The title fight moves to the Gold Coast, 23 to 25 October.
