Max Verstappen (Red Bull) wins the Singapore GP ahead of Charles Leclerc (+7.335 s) and Kimi Antonelli; Lewis Hamilton ends sixth after a failed gamble.

Key point

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) wins in Singapore for the first time, 7.335 s clear of Charles Leclerc (Ferrari); third-placed Kimi Antonelli leads the championship by 102 points.

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) won the Singapore Grand Prix, the 17th round of the F1 season, for his first victory at the Marina Bay circuit. The Dutchman finished 7.335 s ahead of Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and 24.573 s ahead of Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes).

A win without radio

According to Motorsport-Magazin, Verstappen won without a radio link to his team. After another tricky start, as in the sprint, he defended his position into the first corner and kept the lead, F1journaal reports. He had finished second in Singapore several times before finally winning there.

Hamilton and Ferrari's gamble failed

Lewis Hamilton had hoped for at least a podium. He started on medium tyres and aimed for a one-stop race, but the medium performed worse than the soft, according to Crash.net. Under a virtual safety car the team called him in; he missed the pit entry and chose to stay out. Late on, tyre degradation cost him three places and he finished sixth. Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur judged the decision a mistake overall; Hamilton took full responsibility.

Championship: Antonelli stays in front

After Singapore, Kimi Antonelli has 340 points, ahead of George Russell (238), Lewis Hamilton (229), Max Verstappen (221) and Charles Leclerc (215). In the constructors' standings Mercedes lead with 578 points, ahead of Ferrari (444), McLaren (339) and Red Bull (332). Six races and 150 points remain. According to GPFans, Antonelli would clinch the title at the United States Grand Prix in Austin if he wins and Russell finishes outside the top 8.
