Key point
On 20 October 2026 Honda confirmed Diogo Moreira's promotion to the HRC factory team for 2027, with David Alonso joining Johann Zarco at LCR.
On 20 October 2026 Honda settled the last open question on its 2027 MotoGP line-up: Diogo Moreira joins the Honda HRC Castrol factory team alongside Fabio Quartararo, and David Alonso takes his place at Pro Honda LCR, with Johann Zarco as team-mate.
Moreira rewarded for his first MotoGP season
The 22-year-old Brazilian has signed a multi-year contract. He leaves LCR Honda, where he is riding his premier-class rookie season after winning the 2025 Moto2 world title in his fourth season in the world championship. Honda sums up his career since his 2022 debut as five wins, 13 podiums and nine pole positions across the lightweight and intermediate classes.
In MotoGP, Honda describes a step-by-step build-up: a first top ten at the Catalan GP, then regular fights for top Honda honours. His Sprint podium at Motegi, Honda's home race, is the manufacturer's only official podium of the season, according to Crash.net. MotoMatters has him ahead of team-mate Johann Zarco and factory rider Joan Mir in the championship.
Moreira will be the first Brazilian in the factory Honda squad since Alex Barros, who took four podiums in 2004 on the RC211V. He will make his HRC debut at the Valencia test in December.
Alonso starts at LCR
Colombia's David Alonso has 32 podiums, including 20 wins, across four world championship seasons, plus the 2024 Moto3 title. He steps up to MotoGP in 2027 with Pro Honda LCR. According to MotoMatters, the decision follows a disappointing Moto2 season for him; Honda had signed him without saying which team he would ride for, and HRC then pushed to promote Moreira. Placing a rookie in a satellite team is the usual approach in MotoGP, the site notes.
What the teams say
Yuzuru Ishikawa, general manager of HRC's motorcycle racing division, highlights Moreira's ability to adapt quickly to new bikes, from motocross to MotoGP. He calls the line-up highly competitive for the championship's new technical era, which moves to 850cc engines and Pirelli tyres. LCR team principal Lucio Cecchinello thanked Moreira for his work and welcomes Alonso for 2027.
