Fermín Aldeguer underwent surgery on his right hand on Tuesday 13 October 2026, two days after his crash in the Indonesian Grand Prix of MotoGP. The Gresini Ducati rider has a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal, on the thumb side. On social media he said all was well after the operation.
A crash at Turn 16 in Mandalika
On Sunday 11 October, Aldeguer had moved from sixth to fourth early in the race when he fell at Turn 16. He won the 2025 Indonesian Grand Prix at the same circuit, and in anger he slammed his right hand into the tarmac, which is where the injury happened. It was his fourth crash of the weekend, but the first with physical consequences.
Gresini announced on Sunday that the rider would fly back to Spain that same night for surgery. The operation took place in Barcelona, at the Dexeus University Hospital, under a trauma specialist in hand surgery.
A 2026 season marked by injuries
At 22, in his second MotoGP season, Aldeguer has had one physical setback after another:
- Before the season: fractured shaft of the left femur in a private training session at the Aspar circuit in Valencia. He missed pre-season testing and the opening round in Thailand, and came back in Brazil.
- At Assen: fractured thoracic vertebra (T7) after a crash in practice. He missed the rest of the weekend in the Netherlands, then the German and British Grands Prix, and returned at Aragón.
- In September: outpatient surgery to remove a screw from his left leg.
His results have suffered: a single podium this season, second in Catalonia, and tenth in the championship.
What comes next
Aldeguer joins Pentamina VR46 Ducati in 2027. In 2026, the next appointment is the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island, preceded by a weekend without a race. No return timeline has been given so far.
